Qantas Cyber Hack Confirms Six Million Profiles Compromised

The warning came. The attack followed up. A state of shock, confusion, and damage-controlling measures prevailed over a bizarre week for Qantas.

Qantas Airways, Australia’s flagship carrier, announced a major data breach exposing the sensitive information of up to six million of their customers. The cybercriminals hacked into a third-party platform to access details of the Qantas customer database.

The data security team at Qantas noticed suspicious behavior on a third-party platform, which is integral to its customer service department, on Monday. The team took swift action to thwart the malicious intent of the hackers. It prevented any further damage and secured the internal systems.

Crucially, Qantas has confirmed that its core systems were not directly compromised, and sensitive financial and passport details of passengers remain secure. The attack primarily affected service records (names, phone numbers, email addresses, and frequent flyer numbers).

Qantas Airways has confirmed that passenger login details, passwords, and frequent flyer account information were never contained or accessible through the affected system.

Qantas has set up a help desk and a dedicated section (page) on their official website to address the situation. “We take the responsibility for the information our customers share and trust us with,” Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

Qantas has reassured the passengers that they do not have to take any additional measures and can continue using the official website and app for their upcoming travels.
